Patron eligibility

Patron must be in good standing with the library: no fines or overdue items and all contact information must be up to date. Patron must be at least 18 years old in accordance with’s terms of use.

Loans and Returns

Both Kindle Fire and Kindle Classic have a loan period of 3 weeks. Patrons may NOT renew the Kindle. Unlike other library materials, Kindle packs must be returned to the Basalt Library at the front desk. DO NOT PLACE KINDLES IN THE BOOKDROP. Kindles will not be checked in unless all pack materials are included.

Overdue Kindles

For each day the Kindle is overdue, a $1 fine will be charged to the patron up to the replacement fee of $75. The patron’s account will be blocked if the Kindle is not returned after 3 days of truancy. Fines will continue to accrue after the account is blocked until the device is returned or reported by the patron as lost. At $75 the patron will be charged to replace the item.

Lost or Damaged Kindles

Patrons are responsible for the stewardship of library Kindles. Patrons are required to report lost, stolen or damaged devices to the library promptly. Overdue fines will not be charged after the patron has reported a lost or stolen Kindle or has returned a damaged Kindle. In the case of lost, damaged or stolen kindles, a replacement fee of $75 will be charged to the patron. This fee is not negotiable.

Damage to Kindles

Library staff reserve the right to determine what damage is critical enough to warrant complete replacement of the device and/or device components. Damage includes but is not limited to:

  • Cracks or scratches in the screen
  • Impaired screen sensitivity due to misuse
  • Water damage
  • Stains on the device or case
  • Frayed charging cords
  • Other damage that impairs the device’s function

It is the patron’s responsibility to make sure the device is in proper working order before leaving the library. If a patron notices a problem before leaving, they should report the issue to staff and NOT take the device with them. Once a patron has taken the device off premises, that patron assumes responsibility for the device. If a patron fails to report damage before leaving the library, that patron will still be held accountable for the damage.

Stolen Kindles

In the event a Kindle is stolen from a patron, the patron will still assume responsibility for the device and will be required to replace the item and device components.

Kindle Use

Kindles will be reset before each loan. Patrons will need to set up the Kindle with their own account credentials. This will enable patrons to download Kindle-format Overdrive materials and will also give them the option of purchasing their own Kindle books through the Amazon store. This setup will allow the patron to retain ownership of any titles purchased in the Amazon store, protect a patron’s privacy in regards to reading materials and will also mitigate the issue of patrons linking their financial information to a “public” Amazon account. When a patron returns a Kindle, it will be rest to erase all stored data, leaving a fresh device for the next patron.
